Study in China Q&A

Is there an age limit to study in China?

Unofficial answer · Sources checked

No upper age limit appears in the national rules on enrolling international students at a Chinese university. Order No. 42 gives each university the power to set and publish its own admission conditions in its brochure, and neither that text nor the 2018 quality standards sets a maximum age for admission. Age limits do apply to scholarships: the Chinese Government Scholarship sets them by programme level, from under 25 to under 50, and the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship sets its own range.

What the national enrolment rules say

Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security has governed enrolment since 1 July 2017 (Article 48), and its Chapters 2 to 5 (Articles 7 to 34) apply to higher education institutions (Article 2). Article 11 requires a university to formulate and publish its own international student admission brochure in accordance with the national enrolment provisions, and to recruit according to the conditions and procedures set out in that brochure. Article 12 requires the university to examine an applicant's entry qualifications and proof of financial guarantee, to run an examination or assessment, and then states that admission is decided by the university and that a university may not recruit anyone who does not meet its admission conditions.

The 2018 quality standards, issued as the attachment to Ministry of Education notice Jiaowai [2018] No. 50, tell universities what their own entry standards must cover. Section 1 lists academic background, academic level, language ability, identity qualification and financial ability; section 1.1 sets the minimum education requirement for each level (secondary schooling or its equivalent for diploma and bachelor's entry, a bachelor's degree or its equivalent for master's entry, a master's degree or its equivalent for doctoral entry, with intergovernmental mutual recognition agreements followed where one has been signed). Age is not among the elements listed, and the sections read for this page do not state a maximum or minimum age for admission.

Order No. 42 and the 2018 quality standards are Chinese-language documents; the English wording on this page is this site's translation of the Chinese text.

Who decides whether age counts

The decision sits with the university, because Article 11 places the conditions in the university's own brochure and Article 12 places the admission decision in the university's hands. Whether a particular university states an age limit is therefore a question about that university's brochure, and the answer is not in the national texts: the articles and sections read for this page do not list universities or say how many of them set an age condition. For a specific programme, ask the international student office of that university.

The age limits that do exist: scholarships

These are conditions of the scholarships, not of studying in China in general. The Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, published by the China Scholarship Council on Campus China, states in section IV:

Programme Age condition in section IV
Undergraduate Under the age of 25, with a high school diploma or its equivalent
Master's Under the age of 35, with a bachelor's degree or its equivalent
Doctoral Under the age of 40, with a master's degree or its equivalent
General scholar Under the age of 45, with a high school diploma or higher
Senior scholar Under the age of 50, with a master's degree or the rank of associate professor or above

The same section requires applicants to be non-Chinese citizens in good mental and physical health, and it sets further conditions: the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) with a valid score report for bachelor's programmes, HSK Level 3 for Chinese-taught general scholar programmes (excluding Chinese language majors) and for Chinese-taught senior scholar programmes, HSK Level 4 for Chinese-taught master's or doctoral programmes, and the language and academic requirements of the chosen university for programmes taught in a language other than Chinese.

The Application Guidelines for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025, published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, set a different range in section I: applicants must be aged between 16 and 35 on 1 September 2025. The maximum age for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, and applicants for a bachelor's degree scholarship must be younger than 25 in most circumstances. That is the 2025 edition, written for programmes starting between July 2025 and March 2026; those dates belong to that cycle and have passed, and no later edition was found on chinese.cn when the page was checked.

What the official pages do not say

The articles of Order No. 42 and the sections of the 2018 quality standards read for this page do not state a national age limit for admission, and they do not say which universities apply one. The Chinese Government Scholarship page carries no publication date and no academic year. Neither scholarship guide states anything about the age rules for a student who is not applying for that scholarship.

Related questions

Does the Chinese Government Scholarship require the CSCA for bachelor's programmes?

Yes. Section IV of the Application Guide requires applicants to bachelor's programmes to take the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA) and upload a valid score report; the guide names www.csca.cn as the official site of the assessment.

What HSK level does the Chinese Government Scholarship ask for?

Section IV asks for HSK Level 3 for Chinese-taught general scholar programmes, excluding Chinese language majors, and for Chinese-taught senior scholar programmes, and HSK Level 4 for Chinese-taught master's or doctoral programmes. Can an in-service Chinese teacher over 35 apply for the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship?

The 2025 edition allows the maximum age of 45 for in-service Chinese teachers, while the general range is 16 to 35 on 1 September 2025. Applicants for a bachelor's degree scholarship must be younger than 25 in most circumstances.

Do the national rules set a minimum education level for admission?

Yes, the 2018 quality standards do, in section 1.1: secondary schooling or its equivalent for diploma and bachelor's entry, a bachelor's degree or its equivalent for master's entry, and a master's degree or its equivalent for doctoral entry.
