What are the China student visa requirements?
Unofficial answer · Sources checked
Every applicant starts with the same basic set: a visa application form filled in online, the passport and a photo, proof of legal stay or residence, and any previous Chinese passport or previous Chinese visa. For an X1 visa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' instruction adds the Admission Letter issued by a school or other admitting entity in China and the Confirmation Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or Form JW202); for an X2 visa it adds the Admission Letter only. The embassy or consulate-general that covers your area sets the detailed requirements and may ask for more, and the instruction gives no fees and no processing times.
What the rules say
The lists below come from the "Visa Application Instructions of the People's Republic of China" (申请办理中华人民共和国签证须知) on the Ministry's consular services site. The Regulations articles quoted further down are the English text published by the National Immigration Administration; where a Chinese document name appears, the English rendering is this site's.
Under the instruction's section "Basic Documents", every applicant submits:
- the visa application form, filled in online
- the applicant's passport
- a photo
- proof of legal stay or residence
- the previous Chinese passport or previous Chinese visa
For the detailed requirements on those items, the instruction refers readers to the "Guidance on Visa Application" section of the China Online Visa Application System (consular.mfa.gov.cn/VISA) or to the website of the Chinese embassy or consulate-general in your locality.
On top of the basic set, the instruction lists the following by visa type:
| Visa | Additional documents listed |
|---|---|
| X1 | Admission Letter issued by a school or other admitting entity in China; Confirmation Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or Form JW202) |
| X2 | Admission Letter issued by a school or other admitting entity in China |
The X1 entry carries one further note: the holder must, within 30 days of entering China, apply for a residence permit at the exit-entry administration of the public security bureau of the people's government at or above the county level of the intended place of residence.
The legal basis
The Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners (State Council Decree No. 637, promulgated 12 July 2013, in force from 1 September 2013) set the same requirement in Article 7(11): to apply for the X1 visa, the applicant shall, in accordance with relevant provisions, submit the admission notice issued by the admission institution and the certification documents provided by the competent authority; to apply for the X2 visa, the applicant shall submit such certification documents as the admission notice issued by the admission institution. The two texts describe the same pair of documents in slightly different words — "Admission Letter" and "school or other admitting entity" in the instruction, "admission notice" and "admission institution" in the Regulations.
The final paragraph of Article 7 then states: "The visa authority may, in light of specific cases, require a foreigner to submit additional application material."
What the official pages do not say
The instruction gives no fees and no processing times for these applications.
Its own wording is that the basic documents are submitted "as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality", so the mission handling your case fixes the details; the final paragraph of Article 7 gives the visa authority the same power to require more. The sections read for this page do not set out what any particular mission will ask for, and do not state what happens if one of the listed documents is missing. For the additional material, ask the Chinese embassy or consulate-general for your locality; for the admission documents themselves, ask the school or other admitting entity in China that issues them.
Related questions
Does an X2 visa need a JW201 or JW202 form?
The instruction lists the Confirmation Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or Form JW202) under X1 only, and lists only the Admission Letter under X2. Article 7(11) reads the same way: the certification documents provided by the competent authority appear in the X1 sentence, while the X2 sentence speaks of the admission notice.
What does an X1 holder have to do after arriving in China?
The instruction's note on the X1 visa says the holder must, within 30 days of entering China, apply for a residence permit at the exit-entry administration of the public security bureau of the people's government at or above the county level of the intended place of residence.
Can the embassy ask for documents that are not on these lists?
Yes. The final paragraph of Article 7 of the Regulations says the visa authority may, in light of specific cases, require a foreigner to submit additional application material, and the instruction itself frames the basic documents as required "as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality".
