How much is the CSC scholarship stipend?
Unofficial answer · Sources checked
The monthly stipend under the Chinese Government Scholarship is CNY 2,500 for undergraduates, CNY 3,000 for master's students and general scholars, and CNY 3,500 for doctoral students and senior scholars. These three amounts come from section III of the Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship, published by the China Scholarship Council on Campus China. The stipend is one line of a longer coverage list that also names tuition, accommodation and medical insurance; this page deals only with the stipend.
| Category in the guide | Monthly stipend |
|---|---|
| Undergraduates | CNY 2,500 |
| Master's students / general scholars | CNY 3,000 |
| Doctoral students / senior scholars | CNY 3,500 |
What the rules say
Section III (Scholarship Coverage) of the Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship sets the three amounts above. The page carries no publication date and no academic year, so the figures should be read as those printed on that page when it was checked for this article.
What the official pages do not say
The coverage section read for this page does not state when in the month the stipend is paid, whether it continues during university holidays, or whether the amount changes between years of a programme. Ask the university's international student office.
A different CSC guidebook that does set payment rules
The Guidebook to the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship, also published by the China Scholarship Council on Campus China, sets out payment rules in its coverage section, but only for that separate programme. Under ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship terms stated there, the host university pays the stipend monthly; students who register on or before the 15th of the month receive a full month, those who register after the 15th receive half a month, and graduating students receive stipend for another half month after the graduation date. The same section states that if a registered student stays out of China for more than 15 days for personal reasons, with school holidays excluded, the stipend is stopped during the absence. Its amounts are different from the ones above: CNY 4,000 per month for master's students, CNY 5,000 for doctoral students and CNY 5,000 for research scholars. That guidebook also states that host universities may ask their students to hold an RMB bank account in China to receive the stipend, and refers enrolled students to their host universities for details. None of these are conditions of the general Chinese Government Scholarship.
How one embassy words it
The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Bangladesh, in its announcement dated 19 December 2025 for Chinese Government Scholarship Type A, describes a "Monthly living allowance (approximately CNY 2,500–3,500, depending on program level)". That range is the embassy's own wording and matches the three amounts in the guide rather than replacing them. The announcement gave 10 January 2026 as its application deadline; that deadline belonged to that intake and has passed, and the page carried no notice for a later intake when it was checked.
Related questions
Do I need a Chinese bank account to receive the stipend?
The ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship guidebook states that host universities under that programme may request their students to have an RMB bank account in China to receive the stipend. The Chinese Government Scholarship coverage section read for this page does not state a requirement about how payment is made, so ask the university's international student office.
Is the ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship stipend the same as the Chinese Government Scholarship stipend?
No. That programme's guidebook states CNY 4,000 per month for master's students and CNY 5,000 per month for doctoral students and research scholars, while the CGS guide states CNY 3,000 and CNY 3,500.
Does the stipend continue if I leave China for a while?
The ASEAN-China Young Leaders Scholarship guidebook states that absence from China for more than 15 days for personal reasons stops the stipend during the absence, with school holidays excluded. The Chinese Government Scholarship coverage section read for this page does not state a rule on this point, so ask the university's international student office.
