Study in China Q&A

Can I extend an X2 visa in China?

Unofficial answer · Sources checked

Yes. If you hold an X2 visa and need more time, apply to the exit and entry administration of the public security organ in the place where you stay at least seven days before the stay written on your visa expires, and submit a study certificate issued by the education or training institution where you are enrolled in China (Exit and Entry Administration Law, Article 29; the National Immigration Administration's service guide for the extension, change and reissue of foreigners' visas, section VI.2, item 10). An extension may be granted for no more than 180 days, and the total of all extensions cannot exceed the duration of stay originally written on the visa.

What the rules say

Article 29 of the Exit and Entry Administration Law sets the general rule. Where the duration of stay specified in a visa does not exceed 180 days, the holder may stay in China within that duration. Where the stay needs to be extended, the holder shall file an application seven days prior to expiry with the exit and entry administration of the public security organ under the local people's government at or above the county level in the place of stay, and shall submit information of the specific application matters in accordance with the relevant requirements. If, upon examination, the reasons for extension are appropriate and sufficient, the extension shall be granted; if it is denied, the foreigner shall leave China on the expiry of the duration. The accumulated length of extension shall not exceed the original duration of stay specified in the visa. Article 29 speaks of "foreigners" and of visa durations; it does not name students or the X2 visa.

The service guide states the same seven-day timing and adds the document an X2 holder must bring. Item 10 of section VI.2: a holder of an X2 visa shall submit a current study certificate issued by an education or training institution within the territory of China, the stay may be extended for no more than 180 days, and the accumulated extension of stay shall not exceed the original duration of stay specified in the visa. The Administration's own English page, dated 1 April 2021, states the same two points in English.

The service guide is published in Chinese; the English rendering of it on this page is this site's translation of the Chinese text. Where the two language versions of the Administration's material read differently on a point, this page says so rather than choosing between them.

The two limits work together. The grant itself is capped at 180 days, and the running total of extensions is capped at whatever stay was printed on the visa when it was issued. A visa that specified 60 days cannot be extended past 60 days of extension in total, even though a single grant may be up to 180 days.

Who decides and how long it takes

The Law gives the decision to the exit and entry administration of the public security organ at or above the county level in the place of your stay. That is the office named in Article 29; the Law does not describe how that office receives applications.

On timing, section VIII of the service guide states that where an application for extension, change or reissue meets the conditions for acceptance, it shall be accepted and a receipt issued, and the decision whether to issue shall be made within the validity of that receipt. The validity of the receipt runs from the date of acceptance and does not exceed seven working days. The section read for this page sets no other time limit, and it does not state how long an individual case takes inside that period.

What the fees are

Section IX of the service guide prints the following charges. The amounts are those printed in that section for nationals of non-reciprocal countries; for reciprocal countries the guide states only that fees are charged at the prescribed standard, and prints no amount.

Item as printed in the fee section Fee for nationals of non-reciprocal countries
Zero-entry visa RMB 160 per person
Single-entry visa RMB 206 per person
Double-entry visa RMB 313 per person
Multiple-entry visa, six months or less RMB 413 per person
Multiple-entry visa, one year or less RMB 619 per person
Adding or removing accompanying persons RMB 160 per person
Reciprocal countries Charged at the prescribed standard; no amount printed

The fee section read for this page lists charges by visa category; it does not set out a separate line for an extension, and it does not print an amount for applicants from reciprocal countries.

What the official pages do not say

The sections read for this page do not state a required form, wording or validity period for the study certificate, do not say whether an application may be filed online, and do not state any consequence for filing later than seven days before expiry. For the certificate, ask the education or training institution in China where you are enrolled; for the application itself, ask the exit and entry administration in the place where you stay.

Related questions

How early do I have to apply?

Seven days before the stay written on your visa expires. Article 29 of the Law sets that deadline, and section VI.2 of the service guide states it in the same terms: the application shall be filed seven days prior to the expiry of the duration specified in the visa, together with the supporting materials required.

How many days can an extension add?

Up to 180 days for a single grant, and no more than the original stay printed on your visa in total. Both the Law, Article 29, and item 10 of section VI.2 of the service guide state the accumulated limit; neither fixes a minimum length for a grant.

What document does an X2 holder have to bring?

A current study certificate issued by an education or training institution within the territory of China. Item 10 of section VI.2 names exactly that document for X2 holders, and the Administration's English page states it as a "current study certificate" from an education or training institution in China.

What happens if the extension is refused?

You leave China on the expiry of the stay written on your visa. Article 29 states this directly: if an extension is denied, the foreigner shall leave China on the expiry of the duration. The article read for this page gives no further step, such as an appeal.
