How long does a China student visa application take?
Unofficial answer · Sources checked
There is no single national processing time for a Chinese student visa. Each mission states its own, counted in working or business days, and each reserves room to take longer in an individual case: the figures printed on the pages read for this page are four working days for regular service and three for express. None of those pages separates student visas from other ordinary visas, so a study application runs on the same timetable as any other.
What the missions print
| Mission | Processing time, in the page's own words | Date carried on the page |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom (FAQs and Answers) | "If the documents are well prepared, it will normally take four working days for the application to be processed, but the approval time may vary for individual applications"; express service "takes three working days" | time stamp 2020-07-01 |
| United States (Requirements and Procedures) | "Regular service: 4 business days"; "Express service: 3 business days (urgent situation)"; the time "is average and for reference only and is calculated from the date of passport submission", and "Some applications may require longer processing time" | notice dated 22 September 2025, "Updated September, 2025" |
| India (Notice on Updating Requirements) | "the processing period by the Embassy is usually 3 working days (for express application) and 4 working days (for regular application)"; VIP service is a third-party service of the visa centre and "is NOT related to the issuance of visas by the Embassy or the processing time" | 2024-08-20, "Update August, 2024" |
| Pakistan (Visa Processing Time and Fee) | "The Embassy generally needs 4 working days to process the application after receiving the passport, and doesn't provide urgent or extra urgent service"; time "may vary from case to case" for reasons including document supplementation and an embassy interview | 2025-04-28 |
| Nigeria (application guidelines for Nigerian citizens) | "Normally it will take 4 working days to process visa application, which is subject to visa officer's decision" | 2024-09-06 |
| Kenya (visa types and materials) | "Regular service: 4 business days"; "Express service: 3 business days (urgent situation)" | date line 2026-07-09 |
Each row is the statement of the mission named, not a rule for Chinese missions generally. The US notice covers applications made to the embassy in Washington; the Pakistan page adds that collection is at the visa application service centre entrusted by the embassy, at the time given on its pick-up form.
How far in advance to apply
One of the pages addresses this directly. The Embassy of the PRC in the United Kingdom advises applicants in the UK to submit 1–2 months before the planned date of entry to China, saying that applying too early may leave the visa expired on the day of actual travel, while applying too close to the travel date risks having to postpone the trip because of delay in processing. That is this embassy's advice for applicants in the UK; the other pages read for this page do not give an advance-application interval.
The same embassy's page also says that applicants should collect their visas within the informed date, that failure to do so "will affect any further visa applications", and that a visa left uncollected for more than three months after the proposed collection date "will be disposed of as unclaimed".
What the official pages do not say
The pages read for this page do not state a processing time for student visas as such; they describe ordinary visa processing, and the study application is not given a separate figure or a separate queue. They also do not state a single national standard, and they do not say how long a case takes once extra documents or an interview are involved, beyond the Pakistan page's note that time may vary for those reasons and that a returned application which is resubmitted counts as a new application, recounted from the date the new application is forwarded to the embassy. For the timetable that will apply in your case, ask the embassy or visa centre that will handle your application, or your university's international student office.
Related questions
Do student visas get a different processing time?
No page read for this page prints one. Each mission's figure is stated for visa applications generally, and none of them sets out a separate time for study, so the student application is processed under the ordinary-visa timetable printed by that mission.
When does the counting start?
The two pages that specify it start the count at the passport rather than at online submission: the US notice says the time "is calculated from the date of passport submission", and the Pakistan page says the embassy needs four working days "after receiving the passport". The other pages read here do not state a starting point.
What happens if I have to apply again?
The Pakistan page says that a returned application which is resubmitted "will be considered as a new application, and processing time will be recalculated from the date the new application is forwarded to the Embassy". The other pages read for this page do not address resubmission.
Is the stated time guaranteed?
The pages present these figures as norms rather than guarantees: the US notice calls its times "average and for reference only", the UK page says "the approval time may vary for individual applications", the Nigeria page says four working days is "subject to visa officer's decision", and the Pakistan page says the time "may vary from case to case".
