Study in China Q&A

Can I study Chinese in China for one semester?

Unofficial answer · Sources checked

Yes. Under Order No. 42, a semester of Chinese study is not one of the degree categories, and a stay of 180 days or less counts as short-term study, which is applied for on an X2 visa. The scholarship example below covers a one-semester programme with its own conditions, which apply only to that scholarship.

What the rules say

Order No. 42 sorts international students into degree categories (junior college, bachelor's, master's and doctoral) and non-degree categories (preparatory students, advanced students and research scholars), according to Article 9. A one-semester language course does not fall under the degree categories.

Length of stay decides the visa type. Article 45 defines short-term study as study at a Chinese school for no more than 180 days, inclusive, and long-term study as more than 180 days. The Regulations on the Administration of the Entry and Exit of Foreigners, Article 6 (item 11), say that the X1 visa is for long-term study and the X2 visa is for short-term study. The English text of the Regulations is published by the National Immigration Administration.

Length of study in China Classification Visa Basis
180 days or less Short-term study X2 Order No. 42, Article 45; Regulations, Article 6 (item 11)
More than 180 days Long-term study X1 Order No. 42, Article 45; Regulations, Article 6 (item 11)

Article 35 of Order No. 42 says the visa must be applied for before entry, at the Chinese embassy or consulate in your country of nationality or residence, or at another overseas mission the Ministry of Foreign Affairs entrusts. The application must be made according to your study period and include the study certificate filed with the education authority and the admission letter issued by the school, along with other required materials. (Order No. 42 is in Chinese. The English wording here is this site's translation.)

If the study visa states that a residence document is needed after entry, Article 36 requires you to apply within 30 days of the date of entry to the exit-entry administration of the public security authority where you plan to live. If you live off campus, Article 24 requires you to register at the public security authority for your residence place promptly.

Article 40 of Order No. 42 says schools run a universal insurance system for international students, and students must insure themselves as national rules and their school require. Article 39 requires a physical examination or the confirmation procedure at enrolment.

Who decides

The university decides on admission. Article 12 says the school reviews your eligibility and financial guarantee documents, tests or assesses you, and makes the admission decision. Article 11 says the school sets and publishes its international student admission brochure, and admits students under the conditions and procedures in that brochure.

Article 14 requires the university to publish its fees for international students and its refund rules for withdrawal and transfer. Fees and refunds are priced in RMB. Order No. 42 does not set a semester fee, so the figure comes from the university's brochure.

The embassy or consulate handles the visa under Article 35. The exit-entry office handles residence documents under Article 36.

Funding example: the scholarship's one-semester programme

The International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2025 has a One-Semester Study Program. The guidelines state that it starts in either September 2025 or March 2026 and lasts a maximum of five months. These conditions belong to that scholarship only.

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens aged 16 to 35 on 1 September 2025 (Eligibility, items 1 and 5). The HSK and HSKK conditions for the one-semester programme are:

Programme (as listed in section 5) HSK HSKK
International Chinese language education, Chinese language and literature, Chinese history, Chinese philosophy Minimum score of 180 at HSK Level 3 Required
Traditional Chinese medicine or Taiji culture HSK scores required Priority to applicants who also provide an HSKK score

Appendix 1 of the guidelines says the scholarship covers tuition, accommodation, a living allowance, and comprehensive medical insurance. For one-semester students, the monthly living allowance is RMB 2,500 per person, and the insurance premium is RMB 400 per person. Appendix 1 gives no tuition figure.

The deadline for the March 2026 intake was 31 October (Beijing time), with review by the Recommending and Host Institutions due by 10 November. These dates belong to the 2025 cycle, so check the scholarship website (chinese.cn) for the dates of any later cycle. The guidelines state that, "in principle", applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for the One-Semester Study Program or the One-Year Study Program (Miscellaneous, item 1).

Where to check the rest

For the courses offered, their length, and the fees for a semester, read the admission brochure of the university you are considering. Section VI, item 2 of the scholarship guidelines directs applicants to the Host Institutions for curriculum and course listings. For the list of documents your embassy or consulate requires for an X2 application, ask that office directly. For residence registration after arrival, ask the exit-entry office at your place of residence.
