What is HSK 3.0 and when does it start?
Unofficial answer · Sources checked
HSK 3.0 is the upgraded version of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), built on a new "Three Stages, Nine Levels" framework. CTI announced on 9 September 2026 that HSK 3.0 launches worldwide, with its first test on 13 December 2026. Registration closes at 24:00 Beijing time on 16 November 2026 for the paper-based test and on 3 December 2026 for the computer-based test.
What the new test is
The new HSK replaces the current six-level system with a "Three Stages, Nine Levels" framework, which covers elementary, intermediate and advanced proficiency. The HSK page says the new test is guided by the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education. The page prints that standard's name in English.
The HSK page describes the new version as an evolution and systematic upgrade of the existing test. It says the changes include adjustments to question types, number of questions, test duration and listening speed.
Test dates and registration
The notice on the CTI site gives one test date and two registration periods. All times are Beijing time.
| Test format | Registration period (Beijing time) |
|---|---|
| Paper-based test | From now until 24:00 on 16 November 2026 |
| Computer-based test | From now until 24:00 on 3 December 2026 |
The notice gives a single test date, 13 December 2026, together with the two registration periods above. To register, the notice says to visit www.chinesetest.cn, find the test centres in your country and register online there.
What it assesses and covers
The new HSK assesses five language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. The HSK page lists translation as assessed at advanced levels.
The new test syllabus covers five components: tasks, topics, vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters. The HSK page says the syllabus sets out the communication objectives learners are expected to reach.
Where to check the rest
The "About the New HSK" section of the HSK page describes a move from the current six-level system to a 'Three Stages, Nine Levels' framework, and the 9 September 2026 notice gives the test date, the registration periods and how to register. Neither passage sets out a level-by-level correspondence between the old and new levels. Do not assume a mapping to the current levels until the test organiser publishes one.
Neither the notice nor the HSK page says whether scores from the current HSK remain accepted after the change. For either question, ask the university's international student office or the scholarship body you are applying to, and get the answer in writing.
