Study in China Q&A

What is the JW202 form?

Unofficial answer · Sources checked

The JW202 is the "Visa Application for Study in China" form for self-funded international students, and it is issued by the university that admits you, not by you. The Ministry of Education's reply of 15 February 2008 states that each higher education institution handles the form for the international students it has admitted, and that the JW201 and JW202 forms are important documents for handling the study visa, entry, registration at the university and the residence permit.

The English wording used on this page for the Chinese texts is this site's own translation.

What the rules say

The Ministry of Education reply of 15 February 2008, answering a question dated 13 December 2007, sets out the two forms and who issues them:

  • The JW202 ("Visa Application for Study in China") is for self-funded international students in China, and is handled by each higher education institution for the international students it has admitted.
  • The JW201 is for Chinese Government Scholarship students or students coming through inter-governmental exchange channels, and the secretariat of the China Scholarship Council handles the relevant procedures in consultation with the universities concerned.
  • Both forms are described in the reply as important documents for international students in China for the study visa, entry, registration at the university and the residence permit procedures.

The same reply also states that any institution that enrols international students can provide the JW202, and that a private university can apply to the provincial-level education administrative department in its locality and, once agreement is given, enrol international students and obtain the JW202 as needed.

Where the form appears in the X1 document lists

Both visa pages read for this page place the JW201/JW202 in the X1 document list, under slightly different English names.

Page Documents listed for the X1 visa How the form is named
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Visa Application Instructions of the People's Republic of China Admission Letter issued by a school or other admitting entity in China; Confirmation Form for Study in China (Form JW201 or Form JW202) "Confirmation Form for Study in China"
Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United Kingdom, Part Two: How to Apply for a Visa for China Admission Letter from a college, university or other educational institution in China; original or photocopy of "Visa Application for Study in China" (Form JW201 or Form JW202); original or photocopy of the "Confirmation Form for Elementary Stages Students Study in China issued by Chinese relevant authorities" (for elementary stage) "Visa Application for Study in China"; a photocopy is accepted on that page

Both pages also state that an X1 holder must apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entering China — the Ministry's page at the exit-entry administration of the public security bureau of the people's government at or above the county level of the intended place of residence, and the UK embassy's page at the exit/entry administration of the local public security bureau in the proposed place of residence.

Who decides

The reply identifies the admitting university as the body that handles the JW202 for the students it admits, and the provincial-level education administrative department as the body whose agreement a private university needs before it can enrol international students. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs consular page states that requirements are as required by the Chinese Embassy or Consulate-General in your locality; the document list on the embassy's UK page is what that mission asks for, which is that mission's own statement and not a rule for all missions. The UK page carries a time stamp of 1 July 2020.

What the official pages do not say

The 2008 reply does not describe the layout or fields of the JW202 and does not mention downloading the form. The pages read for this page do not state a fee for the form, a processing time, or what happens if a university does not issue one. For those points, ask the international student office of the university that admitted you, the Chinese embassy or consulate handling your application, or the exit-entry administration of the public security bureau.
